Sudden and especially prolonged exposure to uncharted and uncomfortable academic, social, and cultural environments can lead to feelings of bewilderment: Culture shock, if you will. Inevitably, many people will experience an amplified sense of disorientation as we acculturate ourselves to our new normal amid the current pandemic. While there is no way to entirely prevent adverse emotional reactions to crisis, adversity can also lead to transformational growth. For, as we become more open to finding opportunities to adopt new perspectives, accept, and embrace the challenges ahead, we catalyse growth and build personal resources. Arguably, for most it is counterintuitive to focus on the benefits of dealing with feelings of anxiety, emotional turmoil, isolation, loneliness, and uncertainty as we navigate our way through changes and suffering. Yet we can prepare for and minimize the detrimental effects of hardship by building emotional awareness, psychological flexibility, and coping strategies to negotiate difficult situations when the going gets tough. Thus, navigating one’s way through new and unexpected challenges can present an exciting adventure and a rewarding experience. This experiential seminar will challenge you to reflect on and discover pathways to taking constructive action to generate mindfulness and self-compassion, build resilience, and foster a sense of relatedness and community despite physical distance. Firmly rooted in the science of positive psychology, we will critically examine how to strategically use research-based interventions, techniques, and strategies for both negotiating, adjusting, and adapting to our current circumstances whilst actively fostering emotional health, social, physical, and psychological wellbeing.
