We will analyze various text sorts with respect to their characteristics. The main focus will be on how to use texts in the classroom. There will be strong emphasis on the students' work.We will examine several genres of non-fictional texts to practice analyzing or close reading by reading through lenses, finding patterns, and developing a new understanding of the texts. Also, we willl work with academic texts in our disciplines in order to advance skills in the efffective interpretation and citation (including paraphrase) of sources. The highly interactive workshop environment of this course will require that you actively participate, individually and as member of a group, both in and outside of the classroom. We will work with texts that advance your skills and knowledge both as a teacher, incorporating texts into your classroom, and as an advanced university student and academic, analyzing texts for multiple purposes in your academic career. Students signing up for Cirsten Carlson's class will be expected to meet during excursion week.For Heike Mlakar's class: We will be analyzing various texts and genres from a literary perspective (short story, speech, autobiographical writing, ...).
