Prof. Brusberg-Kiermeier's, Lena Schneider's, and Antonia Winter's courses will introduce students to the concept of "Cultural Studies", presenting the main topics, methods, and models connected with this approach. We will try to strike a balance between the theoretical and practical aspects of "culture", i. e. abstract approaches will always be applied to "cultural practices", such as film, advertising or consumption. In addition, categories like class, gender, and identity will be discussed with regard to their reflection in contemporary American and British culture. Texts will be provided in a reader.
Stefanie Hundt's course will introduce students to the concept of culture and "Cultural Studies" but then focus on culture/cultures of the U.S.A. only. It will deal with past and present keynotes in the American society such as diversity, the frontier, public space, or ecology vs. economy to name a few. To understand today's U.S. we will examine the historical impact of American values, beliefs, and myths. Texts will be provided on Learnweb or in class.
