One novel will be mandatory reading for the last third of the semester. Preparation of other, shorter literary texts in the course of the semester is also required, as these will form the basis for discussion. Prospective authors to be included (among others) are Sam Selvon, V.S. Naipaul, Salman Rushdie, Hanif Kureishi, Zadie Smith and Monica Ali. |

The seminar traces the 20th century history of immigration and the cultural impact of the major ethnic minorities in London, as well as the social and cultural preoccupations that arise from the (postcolonial) crossing of cultures.
As the title may imply, the geographic turn in literary and cultural studies is taken into account in a reading and mapping of various literary and filmic representations of lives in the city. |
