Is it true that the Germans are direct and the Americans are superficial? In this course we will discuss the nature and effects of cultural stereotypes on how we speak and interact. Intercultural differences have to be taken into account when we teach English, a truly international language. The development of English into many "Englishes" also raises questions of mutual intelligibility and (inter-)cultural misunderstandings. Other questions to be addressed in the course are the kinds of English that can serve as a teaching model or our attitude to linguistic and cultural norms. Should errors, for instance, to be seen in a new light?
