Primary English: Content-Based Foreign Language Teaching
As laid out in the curriculum for Primary English, Niedersachsen promotes cross-curricular learning and teaching. Whether we call it CBLT (Content-Based Foreign Language Teaching, BLL (Bilinguales Lehren und Lernen), Immersion or CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning), the principle is always the same: the content of subjects such as Sachunterricht in primary schools, or Biology or Geography in secondary schools, is taught in a foreign language. Research has shown that students learn both, the content and the foreign language if certain contextual and methodological aspects are observed. In this course, we will explore how you can use cross-curricular contents such as Sachunterricht topics in the content-based EFL (English as a Foreign Language) classroom. We will discuss questions such as: What are the most important didactic and methodological principles? What makes content-based sessions so interesting – language, content, or both? How can we assess language and content learning? We will evaluate and design teaching materials and carry out group projects. Reading materials will be provided in class.
As a special asset, part of this class will be taught as blended learning in collaboration with colleagues and fellow students at Weingarten University in Southern Germany. |
