Second Language Acquisition
Understanding the principles of second language acquisition (SLA) is one of the major prerequisites for teachers in foreign language classrooms. To evaluate their students' progress, teachers need to be able to understand basic principles of developmental sequences in SLA, the importance of the age factor, the phenomenon of transfer, the acquisition of second language sounds, and the role of language input and output. In international research, the field of Applied Linguistics traditionally covers both the areas of SLA and of foreign language teaching. Questions of learning and teaching principles are becoming more and more intertwined. This class will introduce basic principles and theories of second language acquisition, and will explore their relevance for the foreign language classroom. A special focus will be on SLA in content-based classrooms. We will look at practical language acquisition data from bilingual classes, and highlight specific teaching methods suitable to convey the content of a lesson in the foreign language of the students. Reading materials will be provided in class.
Note: There is an alternative class on Language Acquisition in VM 1.4 taught by S. Thomas! |
