Notably since Kant´s famous dictum of the disinterested nature of aesthetic experience, art is consider `autonomous´. This complicated notion has been both a shelter and a prison, which has been stormed and defended in the course of time. This seminar will move through this history, trying to map out the background to the current use of the notion of autonomy and thinking of its possible future. The course is part of an international project investigating the notion of autonomy, with partner institutes in the U.K. and the Netherlands. The seminar will be in direct contact with students (both artists and theorists) in the other institutes. A limited amount of students can also participate in a summer school in the Van Abbemuseum in the Netherlands. |
