Schools have the central social mission of empowering children and young people to act in a self-responsible, discerning, and democratic manner. Against this backdrop, democracy education represents a fundamental task of school education. In light of current social and political transformation processes, as well as growing challenges to democratic societies, this seminar examines theoretical, empirical, and practice-oriented perspectives on democracy education.
Based on an understanding of democracy as a form of governance, society, and way of life, the seminar explores key approaches in democratic theory and analyzes current empirical findings on the acquisition of democratic competencies in the school context. In addition, concepts of democratic school and classroom development—such as class councils, participatory formats, or deliberative learning arrangements—are critically discussed. Another focus is the analysis and evaluation of educational media and didactic concepts with regard to their potential for democratic learning.
The seminar explores how democratic knowledge, normative orientations, values, and democratic dispositions for action can be developed, practiced, and sustainably embedded in school contexts. In doing so, it systematically integrates democracy education and future skills. The focus is particularly on competencies such as critical thinking, the ability to consider different perspectives, reflective thinking, tolerance for ambiguity, communication and collaboration skills, and the ability to participate responsibly in pluralistic and digitally shaped societies. The seminar thus combines the theoretical foundations of democracy with the current challenges of future-oriented education in a democratic society. |
