Bilingual education has become a growing phenomenon throughout European countries both at primary and secondary level. It has emerged as a major and innovative trend in foreign language education. This seminar introduces the principles of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) and immersion, two innovative approaches that integrate language learning into regular subject teaching. By increasing learners’ contact time with English in meaningful contexts, these approaches can support the development of language proficiency while maintaining strong subject learning. In the seminar, we will explore the theoretical foundations of CLIL and immersion, discuss research on bilingual education, and analyze practical examples from subjects such as mathematics, science, social studies. Participants will also reflect on the opportunities and challenges of teaching content through English and consider how CLIL can be implemented in different educational contexts. To connect theory with practice, the seminar includes an excursion to a school with a bilingual program in Göttingen, offering first-hand insights into CLIL/immersion teaching in real classroom settings. The seminar is part of the Certificate for Bilingual Teaching and Learning. |
