This course explores the use of performance as an artistic response to both local and global social issues. We will delve into the theatrical foundations of performance activism, including experimental, political, and educational theatre, combining theoretical study with the application of established methods. By examining the structures and aesthetic possibilities of performance activism, we will focus on contemporary examples, primarily from BIPOC artists, activists, and performance collectives, with a particular emphasis on current socio-political movements.
Performance activism seeks to effect social change by empowering participants with social and political agency through performative events. This inclusive approach brings together diverse audiences and performers, fostering collectives capable of enacting change. The course integrates performative exercises and experiments both inside and outside the classroom. Students will collaborate with the instructor to create a small, performance-based activist project within the community. Throughout the course, students will develop their artistic practices by engaging with various perspectives and assets related to activism and the performing arts.
Performances, articles, and other resources will be shared as study materials via platforms like Padlet and Mural. |
