This seminar explores the complex and multifaceted role of gender in revolutionary movements, with a particular emphasis on the Arab region. We will delve into how gender dynamics have influenced, and been influenced by, revolutionary uprisings historically and in contemporary times. We will critically analyze the gendered experiences of revolutionaries, the representation of gender in revolutionary discourse, and the impact of these movements on gender relations post-revolution.
The seminar will engage with various theoretical frameworks and case studies to uncover how gender has been both a driving force and a point of contention in revolutions. Topics will include the role of women in revolutionary movements, the intersection of gender with other identities such as class, race, and religion, and the long-term effects of revolutions on gender equality. Particular focus will be given to the Arab Spring, considering how gender issues played out during and after the uprisings in countries such as Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, and Syria.
