In his famous essay „The Storyteller“ (1936), philosopher and cultural theorist Walter Benjamin warned about the end of the art of storytelling. Contrary to his foresight, storytelling currently enjoys a renewal of interest, which is reflected in the literature, in the supporting organizations for storytellers and researchers, as well as in the increase of training and performance possibilities. Apart from the growing interest in the fields such as learning, marketing and journalism, science itself took an interest in stories for their significance to human survival.
In this course, we will focus on the storyteller figure as an anthropological constant throughout the ages and discuss its different forms in various cultures through examining practice examples. Moreover, we will critically explore the structures and contents of the stories that we share as common knowledge. However, one of the main objectives of the course is to offer practical knowledge on the art of storytelling. We will experiment with the important aspects of storytelling such as language, imagination, audience contact, gestures and expressions, voice, tempo, polarities and repetitions through practical exercises. By performing during the class, the participants will gain insights into their own storyteller personas and develop their abilities to tell the stories of their choices.
