This seminar will address why and how we think about music. It will focus on key texts in ethnomusicology to understand the discipline’s history, method (e.g. ethnography, fieldwork) and contemporary debates. Given that this seminar will be undertaken in English, we will also consider a crucial pedagogical element, in this case, reading texts together. This will not only offer critical skills and tools for reading and research at large, but also broaden the horizon of ethnomusicological literature from a global perspective. We will study ethnomusicology and its relationship to disciplines such as Musicology and Cultural Anthropology and understand how music is embedded in culture and political economy. This approach will produce two overarching outcomes: 1) learning about the history, theory, and method in ethnomusicology AND 2) developing reading (and writing) skills for academic study and research.
