Group 1: Bastkowski, Mlakar, Treichel

These seminars are taught in tandem by a state school teacher and a tutor from the university.  A focus is placed on both the theory and practice of language teaching.
This course is designed as an introduction to and a preparation for the English Teaching Practice in the summer term 2024.
We’ll touch on
- key elements of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEF), the German Bildungsstandards and the relevant Kerncurricula
- communicative, action-oriented, task- and content- based theories of foreign language teaching
- key issues, approaches and buzz words for modern teaching in general and foreign language teaching in particular
- the development and design of competence-oriented language teaching

We’ll introduce and discuss
- the choice of material, methodological considerations, the description of difficulties, the relevance of topics and exercises and the evaluation of the lesson outcome
- basic elements of English lessons (predictable outcome, warming up, input, receptive/productive skill training, language practice, presentations and evaluation etc.)
- various elements of language assessment in general and examples of the current external, written and oral examinations in particular

We shall choose and practice exercises, action-oriented activities and tasks for communicative language teaching.

We shall plan lessons and try to teach them in the classroom.

Study requirement of GHR 300 course: regular attendance (2 absences are only permitted, preferably with a doctor's note) to enter practical phase (see Rahmenstudienordnung 2022)

Group 2:

Our team consists of Maria Hosein-Habibi, Maria Ullmann and Joe Couve.

The winter semester is designed to prepare you for your practical phase in the summer semester when you will be in school observing experienced teachers as well as preparing and delivering your own teaching. The focus during the winter term is to familiarize you with various elements of key teaching skills: how to teach the different foreign language competences; how to structure lessons; working with the core curriculum, which forms the basis of your planning; encountering and applying a variety of methods to make learning and teaching as effective and interesting as possible. Our aim is to improve your competence and self-confidence in general, and specifically with regards to planning effective lessons, which will arouse your students’ interests. Part of this development will be about encouraging you to see both sides of the coin: the teacher’s as well as the learner’s.

Our sessions are Thursday mornings between 12.00 am and 14:00 noon. 

Since the Vorbereitungsseminar is a Studienleistung, regular attendance is obligatory. The standard requirements are: preparing one micro-teaching session, writing a portfolio, keeping up to date with reading assignments.

Group 3: Baumgart, Koch, Hosein-Habibi

This course is designed to provide you with the necessary knowledge and skills to successfully complete your school practicum in the spring. During the winter term, our main focus is to familiarize you with a range of essential teaching skills including teaching of foreign language comeptences as well as teaching unit and lesson planning. We will also cover working with the core curriculum, which serves as the foundation of classroom work. We recognize the importance of fostering a passion for lifelong learning in both yourself and your students so this seminar will offer you the opportunity to explore innovative teaching approaches and techniques. 

Please note: regular course attendance is prerequistie to entering the practical phase in spring 2024 (see Rahmenstudienordnung 2022). Maximum 2 absences are permitted (preferably with a doctor's note).
