Excursion to transmediale festival in Berlin
Focus on exhibition and extended program

For over thirty years, the annual festival for art and digital culture transmediale has been bringing together international artists, researchers, activists, and thinkers with the goal of developing new outlooks on our technological era through the entanglement of different genres and curatorial approaches. In its next edition, transmediale will explore how scale (i.e. mapping, syncing, calibrating and prediction) sets technological conditions and expectations that cement the positions from which we perceive the world. From microscopic biomedical imaging, to widespread entertainment, to discreet surveillance technologies, the tools created to measure, map and ultimately dominate the ways we understand our surroundings are based on technical conditions of perception.
This BA seminar creates a space for critical reflection on cultural transformation from a post-digital perspective, with a focus on digital and internet-based artistic practices that have been part of the festival since the 90s until now. The seminar culminates in an excursion to the transmediale 2023 festival in February, with a focus on the exhibition and the extended program.
A compulsory reading list will be presented at the beginning of the seminar.
