This course deals with the theory and practice of intercultural negotiation from a linguistic point of view. In this course, we will make use of scientific texts (English) and exercises, the students will develop a theoretical and practical understanding of the negotiation situations in which different cultures and languages play a role. A special focus is on the use of English in negotiation situations, especially those situations in which English is the lingua franca.
“What are you expected to do?”In this course, I expect you a)to be familiar with key concepts and to understand them well and to give examples of concepts in real situations, and d)to write a term paper individually. The paper could be empirically designed term paper with a linguistic focus, approx. 10-12 pages of pure text. It is imperative that you follow all the guidelines that you will find in "Notes on writing academic papers" and in the "Information sheet on quotations and sources" (see: www.uni-hildesheim.de/fb3/institute/ikk/studium-lehre/)o Deadline: February 15, 2022; please in two formats: on paper in the mailbox and as a pdf file to email@example.comYou are required to interact with a native English speaker who can speak German too/or a German native speaker who can speak English too. You should record your conversation in English for at least two hours (she/he must be informed and you need to her/his written consent). You can use this conversation as a sample to present examples for discussions at class and to use as the data to be used for your term paper.
