All students need to acquire a copy of Michael Meyer's English and American Literatures (UTB Basics, Francke Verlag, 4th Edition).
This class will be taught in a digital format. At this stage it is unclear whether it will be possible to return to a format of classroom presence during the semester.
This course will be taught online using Zoom. In order to participate you will need an internet connnection with a working microphone AND camera. There will be regular webinars so you will need to be available on the day and at the time you have enrolled for.
This course will introduce students to the basic knowledge, tools, and practices of literary analysis and contemporary criticism. We will look at how poetry and drama work and then focus on selected shorter texts and/or novels. Most of the necessary texts and excerpts will be made available for copying. Participants should acquire a copy of Michael Meyer’s English and American Literatures (4th Edition, Stuttgart: UTB basics) BEFORE the semester begins!
Your preliminary reading assignment is the first chapter of Michael Meyer’s English and American Literatures, "What is Literature?" You should make sure you have read this and made notes before the beginning of the first seminar.
