Course description: In the theoretical part of this seminar, first, the subjects related to cultural contact such as "interculturality", "transculturality", "multiculturality"and "hybridity" will be discussed; then some theories of intercultural communication will be presented and probable research methods and research topics based on these theories will be discussed. The theories include: Hofstede’s model of cultural dimensions; face negotiation theory; communication accommodation theory; anxiety/uncertainty management theory; the integrative communication theory of cross-cultural adaptation; the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis. In the practical part of this seminar, students will be asked: 1-to work in small groups to organize a theory and method session. They will discuss many probable research topics too. Six theories mentioned above will be presented with student groups in class. They are required to explain the theory (using examples), to discuss at least one research method and one research topic based on the theory. 2-to write a short essay on a cultural contact phenomenon in society applying one of the theoretical concepts discussed in the seminar (approx. 500 words, to be written by 12/02/2022). 3-to participate in the class discussions and in question/answer |

This seminar is open for exchange students who already hold a B.A.-degree. This is a bilingual seminar (German/English), with a focus on English texts in the theory and method part, German as the default language of instruction, but also the possibility to deal with German-language phenomena in the course of your own research. You must have very good language skills in both languages to participate in this seminar. |
