In SS-2021, this course will be online only (also online examination process). We will provide reading material, which you can process by yourself in the early slot (08:15 - 09:45) or any other time. From 10:00 - 11:30 we will have a video conference discussing exercises where you also can present your solutions.

This year we will focus on "Methods for Dealing with Words". (Thus, you can participate in this course if you already attended the NLP course of summer 2020/2019 to extend your knowledge on NLP.) The course introduces methods from Natural Language Processing that are used to process texts at the level of individual words. We focus on the form of words (word classes, inflected forms, etc.) and on the analysis and description of complex words (compounds, derivatives).We present methods and tools for these tasks, but also discuss their application in spelling correction, fuzzy retrieval, Information Extraction and Retrieval and in the computational treatment of texts as a starting point for further analyses.

While the course is in English, examples dealt with can also come from other languages.

Credits (6 ECTS): regular homework; at least one presentation of a solution to a homework task; research report on a small ownproject at the end of semester; discussion of the research report with the teachers.
