The language of instruction will be English, literature will be available in both English and German. A good command of English is hence necessary for successful participation.

The communicative power of metaphor

This seminar aims to provide an insight into how much of our conceptual system is shaped by metaphors and embodied knowledge. It will apply a cognitive linguistic approach to spoken English in order to reveal the metaphorical structures and image schemas underlying our way of thinking about abstractions. In the second half of the course, we are going to discuss the role of metaphors in specific areas such as illness communication and intercultural communication in order to illustrate their potential for joint meaning construction. For their "Prüfungsleistung", students will be asked to apply what they have learned to a piece of spoken data and conduct a metaphor analysis of their own.
