IThis course provides a survey of Anglo-American short fiction, starting from the beginning of the 20th Century and coming up to the present. We will examine a range of theoretical concepts of modernism and postmodernism and consider how these ideas compare to the actual practice of writing short stories. Over the duration of the course, we will also explore how the short story has evolved into other narrative formats, such as the short-short story and flash fiction. The combination of reading assignments and discussion-driven seminars will facilitate our engagement with a wide-ranging and exciting set of literary texts.
The texts for this course will be made available for photocopying.
