Bilingual education has become a growing phenomenon throughout European countries both at primary and secondary level. It has emerged as a major and innovative trend in foreign language education. This course offers an introduction to current bilingual teaching approaches such as CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) and immersion. We will discuss historical aspects of bilingual education in Germany, variations of bilingual school profiles, current research results, the potential of different school subjects as CLIL subjects, as well as stakeholder perspectives. Another goal will be to examine ways of assessing students in bilingual programmes.
