Course Work (Studienleistung): Regular and active participation, including one in-class presentation.
Final Assessment (Prüfungsleistung):
A written term paper or a video or podcast contribution, including interview-based formats, each accompanied by written documentation.
The written documentation should present the research question, the methodological approach, the literature and sources used, as well as a critical reflection on the artistic or media-based approach.
Sprache: Das Seminar wird zweisprachig auf Englisch und Deutsch durchgeführt. Arbeits- und Diskussionssprachen sind flexibel.
Studienleistung: Regelmäßige und aktive Teilnahme sowie ein Referat im Seminar.
Prüfungsleistung:

“Out of Place” takes its starting point from Edward W. Said’s memoir, where displacement appears as a lived, linguistic and intellectual condition. The seminar examines how theatre, performance and cultural policy engage with experiences and categories such as migration, exile, diaspora and displacement.
At the aesthetic level, the seminar asks how displacement affects artistic form. Arriving somewhere else changes the position from which one speaks, the language in which one appears, and the references through which one is understood. Diasporic aesthetics may work through translation, fragmentation, multilingualism, memory, opacity, humour and multiple forms of address.
At the conceptual level, the seminar critically examines “diaspora” as an analytical category. What does this concept make visible, and what does it obscure? When does it help to analyse artistic practices shaped by movement and dislocation? When does it risk fixing artists through origin, biography, identity or expected narratives of migration?
At the cultural-policy level, the seminar investigates how institutions, festivals, funding structures and urban cultural scenes frame diasporic artistic practices. Who is invited to appear? Who is expected to represent a community, a region or a conflict? How do inclusion, exclusion and proximity operate in global cities and cultural institutions? And when does visibility become recognition, exoticisation, tokenisation or institutional control?
Learning Objectives:
- Critical analysis of “diaspora” as an aesthetic, political and cultural-policy category, with attention to its analytical possibilities, limits, institutional uses and effects on how artists are read, invited and represented.
- Examination of diasporic artistic practices as forms of speech, survival, critique and aesthetic experimentation under conditions of displacement.
- Investigation of cultural institutions, festivals and funding structures in relation to the production of visibility, representation and hierarchies between diasporas in contemporary global cities.

„Out of Place“ nimmt Edward W. Saids gleichnamige autobiografische Schrift zum Ausgangspunkt. Darin erscheint Entortung nicht nur als biografische Erfahrung, sondern als sprachliche, erinnerungspolitische und intellektuelle Bedingung. Das Seminar untersucht, wie Theater, Performance und Kulturpolitik mit Erfahrungen und Begriffen wie Migration, Exil, Diaspora und Verschiebung umgehen.
Auf ästhetischer Ebene fragt das Seminar, wie Entortung künstlerische Formen verändert. Wer an einem anderen Ort ankommt, spricht nicht einfach von dort aus weiter, wo er oder sie vorher stand. Die Position des Sprechens, die Sprache des Erscheinens und die Bezugssysteme, durch die eine Arbeit verstanden wird, verschieben sich. Diasporische Ästhetiken können mit Übersetzung, Fragmentierung, Mehrsprachigkeit, Erinnerung, Opazität, Humor und mehrfachen Adressierungen arbeiten.
Auf begrifflicher Ebene wird „Diaspora“ nicht als selbstverständliche Kategorie vorausgesetzt, sondern kritisch befragt. Was macht der Begriff sichtbar? Was verdeckt er? Wann hilft er, künstlerische Praktiken zu analysieren, die durch Bewegung, Entortung und Mehrfachzugehörigkeit geprägt sind? Und wann besteht die Gefahr, Künstler*innen auf Herkunft, Biografie, Identität oder erwartbare Migrationsgeschichten festzulegen?
Auf kulturpolitischer Ebene untersucht das Seminar, wie Institutionen, Festivals, Förderstrukturen und urbane Kulturszenen diasporische künstlerische Praktiken rahmen. Wer wird eingeladen, sichtbar zu werden? Wer soll eine Community, eine Region oder einen Konflikt repräsentieren? Wie wirken Einschluss, Ausschluss und Nähe in globalen Städten und kulturellen Institutionen? Und wann wird Sichtbarkeit zu Anerkennung, Exotisierung, Tokenisierung oder institutioneller Kontrolle?
Lernziele:
- Kritische Analyse von „Diaspora“ als ästhetischer, politischer und kulturpolitischer Kategorie, mit Blick auf ihre analytischen Möglichkeiten, Grenzen, institutionellen Verwendungen und Auswirkungen darauf, wie Künstler*innen gelesen, eingeladen und repräsentiert werden.
- Untersuchung diasporischer künstlerischer Praktiken als Formen von Sprechen, Überleben, Kritik und ästhetischer Erfindung unter Bedingungen von Entortung.
- Auseinandersetzung mit Kulturinstitutionen, Festivals und Förderstrukturen im Hinblick auf die Herstellung von Sichtbarkeit, Repräsentation und Hierarchien zwischen Diasporas in gegenwärtigen globalen Städten.
