This course is designed as an introduction to U.S. history and culture through the medium of food. Food is highly personal, yet it connects us to others and our culture in very intricate, often invisible ways. Through the lens of food, students will explore the diverse and complex nature of U.S. history and culture. We will examine American foodways, cuisine as well as food traditions, such as Thanksgiving, for the historical and cultural narratives encoded in food practices and writing. Students will engage with a range of sources, including fictional and non-fictional texts, historical documents, recipes, film, and podcasts, to critically examine the ways food mediates national identity, cultural values, and political ideology. Students will leave the course with enhanced critical thinking, communication, and collaborative skills, as well as a deeper understanding of the complexities of American culture and history.
