This course investigates the English lexicon as a dynamic system shaped by history, culture,and human cognition.
Through the lens of lexicology, students will explore how words emerge, evolve, and interact, and how vocabulary reflects the ways we categorize experience, construct meaning, and participate in social life.
We will examine the buildingblocks of the lexicon—word formation, semantic structure, and lexical relations—while also uncovering the cultural, historical, and ideological forces that influence how English speakers choose and interpret words.
Course highlights include:
- Analyzing morphological processes such as compounding, derivation, and borrowing
- Investigating semantic change, polysemy, metaphor, and the conceptual structures underlying meaning
- Exploring how dictionaries, corpora, and digital tools reveal patterns in vocabulary use
- Examining how lexical choices encode identity, power, and social attitudes
- Considering how globalization, technology, and media shape contemporary English vocabulary
Students will also conduct small-scale research projects on a lexical field, word family, or semantic phenomenon of their choice. They will apply theoretical frameworks to authentic anguage data and present their findings in written and oral form
