The enlargement process of the EU at turn of the 21st century was a period of optimism that the ideal of Europe, as an open and diverse political and cultural entity, would become strong enough to tackle old and new problems. The following twenty five years brought new challenges such as War on Terror, austerity policies, the crisis of migration, Brexit, the rise of right wing politics, and the war in Ukraine which all dispersed that optimism. The course will ask the questions: What kind of an imagination of Europe does contemporary European cinema present? How does it reflects on racism, as the old and new challenge?
The course aims to explore cinematic media in its aesthetic and philosophical aspects. The course will cover some seminal texts on racism and the idea of Europe, and their reflections in cinema. Together we will watch both fictional and documentary films and discuss them in light of our readings. The students will acquire the skills of analyzing film not as a mirror of the world but as a contemplative media. They will become informed about the history of the idea of race and of racism, and their larger social implications. |
