In this course, we will practice analysing language from a functional as well as from a formal perspective.
- Analysing syntactic form means learning to distinguish nouns, adjectives, adverbs … , as well as verb phrases, noun phrases, adjective phrases and adverb phrases based on their defining characteristics.
- Analysing syntactic function, on the other hand, means learning to distinguish subjects, objects etc.
We will go beyond what is usually taught in schools in several respects. Firstly, we will learn to represent sentences as syntactic trees and, secondly, we will discover that there isn’t actually the one English Grammar that all linguists agree on, but a wide range of theories, some based on fundamentally different theories about language, of these, we will study two.
In comparison to the Prüfungsleistung “termpaper”, this course’s Prüfungsleistung “portfolio” means that slightly more of the workload falls into the semester (in the form of at-home practice) and lightly less into the semester break.
