Apocalypse has often been a topic of representation in popular culture. However, with the current cluster of crises (climate crisis, Anthropocene crisis, inflation, post-pandemic health crisis, wars etc.) popular culture has seen a rise in the production of (post) apocalyptic scenarios. In this course, we will deal with those trends that focus on depopulation, authoritarian control of body and gender (for example, the TV series Handmade’s Tale), cosmic disasters (for example, the movie Don’t Look Up), pandemics, zombie invasion, and other visions of the very close future. We will treat them as not strictly dystopian but also as a way to imagine and build different political worlds. This will be the way to discuss not only the imagination of the future, but also current political phenomena, and to explore the dominant effects of the (possible end) of the Anthropocene – the period during which humans have had such a substantial impact on the planet that it could be considered (albeit without consensus) a geological epoch.
