Working closely with American Dark Fantasy author AJ Gala, students will collaboratively translate her short novel Bone Priestess (2020) into German. The genre of fantasy presents the unique opportunity to experiment with creative translation strategies, as literal translations will often prove impractical or impossible. Thus, we hope to foster a collaborative relationship in which you feel encouraged and empowered to take ownership of the text. While we use literature as our mode of exploration, the ideas and techniques we discuss will be applicable to a wide variety of fictional and non-fictional texts. The class is particularly suited for advanced students who wish to review and practice elements of textual analysis and translation in preparation for their bachelor’s thesis.
Alongside theoretical considerations—such as Venuti’s—and a review of translation methods, students will examine the cultural assumptions behind texts, reflect on their own identity as translators, and jointly develop strategies that balance accuracy with crafting an engaging text. Assignments are designed to build toward the final translation project, with students first composing a response paper, an audience profile, and a shared glossary before drafting and workshopping their assigned sections of the novel. The completed translation will be evaluated as a unified class effort, emphasizing teamwork and editorial cohesion. A final reflection paper encourages students to critically assess their development and the challenges of collaborative translation. |
