“The English language never stands still. The history of English is astory of perpetual evolution, shaped by social, political, and technological forces.” (The Oxford History of English, Lydia Mugglestone).
English has undergone remarkable transformations, from its early Germanic roots to the global lingua franca it is today. Its history is not one of linear development but of constant change, shaped by migration, conquest, cultural shifts, and innovation. Understanding this history is key to understanding the language itself.
Inthis seminar, we will trace the development of English from its earliest forms to the present day. We will begin by exploring its origins and the external influences that have shaped its structure and vocabulary. We will then examine major historical periods, including OldEnglish, Middle English, and Early Modern English, considering the linguistic shifts brought about by events such as the Norman Conquest, the Renaissance, and the rise of print culture. Finally, we will discuss contemporary developments, including the spread of English worldwide and ongoing changes in pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary.
Throughout the course, we will engage with historical texts, linguistic analysis, and key debates in the field. |
