The social changes that went along with the political upheaval of 1989/90 in the countries of statesocialism were not limited to the political system, economic structures or social conditions. The late phase and the end of state socialism were marked by a far-reaching transformation of popularculture, with global cultural changes becoming an important driver of the post-communisttransformation. In countries like former Yugoslavia and successor states, these transformations of popular culture and popular music in particular had a great significance in nation-building and interethnic conflicts after 1991 and the dissolution of the country, but also in the reconciliation. At the same time, the popular music industry was a leader in the transition to the capitalist economy. In this seminar, we will explore the topics of popular culture in postsocialism through the following subthemes: the transformation of cultural institutions after the end of state socialism, new modes of subjectivity and identity, a changed relationship between popular culture, politicsand nation, symbolic use of popular culture, new genres and the discourses surrounding them, and economic transformations of music markets. However, the direct application of the theories based on Western societies resulted in Orientalism, reductionism, and a lack of understanding ofthe phenomena in their context. In this seminar, students will be trained on how to avoid that. Themajority of examples will be from popular music in post-Yugoslav states after 1991, but the other countries and fields will be addressed too |
