This course places a strong emphasis on audience participation and integrating theories of engagement and inclusivity into performance methods. We delve into the agency of participants through theoretical frameworks and real-world case studies spanning from Rituals in the Global South to contemporary theatre and performance worldwide. By examining the performative aesthetics of participatory performances and grappling with the ethics of participation, we empower each other with the knowledge and understanding needed to create empowering and inclusive participatory theatre. We explore if participatory theatre can serve as an alternative public sphere, fostering meaningful connections and emancipation.
