The focus of this course is on the represetations of surveillance and voyeurism in literature and their complex correlations to forms of social control and 21st-century capitalism.
Accordingly, we will be examining this research topic through a close reading of George Orwell's 1984 and Dave Eggers' The Circle. We will read a selection of critical texts and extracts by theorists such as Sigmund Freud, Michel Foucault and Laura Mulvey, as well as modern theorisations of surveillance by leading scholars such as David Lyons and Shoshana Zuboff.
These contributions will enable us to explore a range of theorectical concepts such as "the gaze", "erotic desire" and "social media voyeurism". For this course you will need to obtain a print copy of George Orwell's 1984 and Dave Eggers' The Circle.
