Empirical research is needed to understand language acquisition processes in the foreign language classroom. Data need to be gathered, analyzed, and discussed, based on qualitative studies such as classroom observations or expert interviews, quantitative studies using tests and experiments in the classroom, or mixed methods studies using both approaches. Empirical research may help to identify factors that influence language learning and improve our conceptions of foreign language teaching.
This course will cover second language research methodology with a particular focus on research in the language classroom.
In addition to discussing existing studies, you will conduct your own small research projects. The class is designed to help you get prepared for your own empirical studies for your bachelor's and master's theses.
The class is part of the 'Certificate of Bilingual Teaching and Learning'.
