This course is designed to explore the intersection of digital media and performance art. Through a combination of theories and practice, we will examine how digital platforms and technology have affected the sense of community-making in performance art and its functions for diversity and freedom of speech. Taking a look at case studies of online performances, such as WhatsApp and Instagram performances, Zoom theaters, and other digital platforms that have emerged as new venues for artistic expression, we will learn how these platforms interact with dominating social and political systems, and how they can facilitate activism and stage freedom of expression. Reading critical theories on aesthetics of performance and social activism, we will analyze the ethical and political implications of using digital media in performance art. We will discuss the ways in which these technologies can both facilitate and constrain artistic expression. Throughout the course, students will have the opportunity to create their own digital performances, using a range of tools and techniques to experiment digital spaces of performance. They will also participate in group critiques and discussions, where they will share and receive feedback on their work. |
