If all music is made by some folk (people), then what is ‘folk’ music? How and why has it come to be known in this way? How does the idea of tradition traverse the world of music? This course critically interrogates the twin ideas of ‘folk’ and ‘tradition’ in music, drawing from examples from different regions and musical cultures. We will explore how these ideas have been historically articulated, as well as contested and debated, and how they continue to operate in the world today. The seminar will be offered in a mix of Deutsch and English, and students are free to participate in either language. The texts will however, all be in English. |
