What does it mean to be German? What constitutes Germanness? The current resurgence of the far right in Germany prompts us to examine various aspects of this society. This seminar will focus on the musical, artistic, and creative voices in postmigrant Germany, in order to gain a deeper understanding of what "Germanness" might entail. We will explore the contributions of Turkish, Vietnamese, and Mozambican "gastarbeiter" (migrant workers), as well as those of present-day "refugees", to German society, and examine the historical and cultural context of terms such as "migration", "postmigration", and "multikulti". Through a wide range of musical expressions, from Yiddish music to hip-hop, we will delve into the diverse cultural landscape that has shaped Germany over the past century and a half. By examining these musical expressions, we aim to better comprehend the evolving identity (and crisis) of Germany within Europe though the prism of the following key events and moments in history: its colonial history in south-west Africa, military and corporate involvement in multiple wars and mass killings, the contradictions of German reunification, and the various remarkable philosophical and artistic movements that have emerged over time. Ultimately, this seminar seeks to explore Germany's conception of memory culture, national identity (or the lack thereof), and Staatsräson, in order to gain a more nuanced understanding of the complexities of what democracy and nation-states mean in a postmigration era. |
