This is a survey course of selected non-western musical cultures of the world. We begin by thinking and reading about the nature of listening, subjectivity, and the ‘universality’ of music. We then embark on an aural journey that starts from the peripheries of Europe, and takes us through Turkey, The Arab World, Africa, and through to South Asia and beyond. Each week will be spent reading texts that cover diverse aspects of the musical cultures we study as well as a selected sample of listening. The goal of this seminar is to broaden our listening, and think more deeply and critically about the various ways in which music is imbued with meaning. The seminar will be offered in a mix of Deutsch and English, and students are free to participate in either language. The texts will however, all be in English. |
