This course introduces students to the sounds and music(s) of South Asia. The region we call South Asia today is an extremely diverse and sonorous amalgamation of various cultures and peoples that stretches across the countries of Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Srilanka. In this course, due to the instructor's own background, we will draw primarily on examples from various regions in Pakistan, India, and Afghanistan to listen and think through cultures of sound and music in the region. The course will divided in to themes such as Instruments, Genres, Modernity, etc. and we will read texts and papers on the subject from the disciplinary perspectives of Ethnomusicology, Anthropology, and History. Each class will have mandatory listening as well as in class listening exercises, demonstrations, and discussions.
