This seminar is dedicated to the enormously relevant and extremely successful genre of Gothic fiction. The British Library not only houses many of the original manuscripts of famous Gothic texts, it also offers a range of insightful articles online:

We will start by looking at the origins and motifs of the Gothic and read five short stories by Edgar Allan Poe.In the course of the term we will turn to three films by Alfred Hitchcock which are famous for their Gothic elements: Rebecca (1940), Vertigo (1958), and Psycho (1960).In addition, students will form specialist groups and focus on a short story/a novel or on a film/television series of their choice.
