This course will introduce students to a range of topics concerning the use of digital technologies for foreign language education. In particular, students will learn about current principles, research, practices, and challenges, as well as the history and future implications of “digitalizing the L2 classroom.” The course’s main focus will be to explore the connection between Second Language Acquisition theories and the implementation of current Internet and multimedia technologies. Specifically,we will examine how technology can, does, and has supported the development of communicative competence in L2 learners. However, we will also explore other pedagogical and didactic issues, including course management, student learning assessment, and the overall question: “What is the ultimate value of using digital, as opposed to analog, tools for teaching an L2?” This course aims to cover the essentials that English language educators need in the field of second/foreign language education, and to prepare them for the Digitalpakt Schule education environment. Only basic prior technical experience is required. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. critically examine the interface between pedagogy, SLA theory, and technology through discussion of selected texts and multimedia; 2. explain the role of technology in L2 instruction; 3. use various technological tools in the context of foreign language education; 4. explore and assess current technologies for L2 instruction; and 4. develop technology-enhanced activities to use for the L2 classroom. |
