In today's world we experience more fluidity in our social lives due to the increasing incidence of border crossing by workers, asylum seekers, migrants; as indiviudals, families or even shole communities. Nation states and their key institutions are losing their importance as these social flows transcend nationally constituted boundaries and connect formerly different social worlds together. One of the most important phenomena in this respect is migration, voluntary, forced or in the context of asylum seeking. Migration processes disturb the seemingly natural ordering of the social world into distinct nation states and is associated with a transformation of knowledge of both migrants and non-migrants. The course provides students with core concepts and insights of the emerging field of transnational studies. It wmphasizes particularly the meaning and importance of knowledge in this area. Particularly in social work and related fields, it is important to realize that knowledge, e.g. knowledge certified by educational achievements, depends on social and cultural contexts and is not recognized everywhere in the same way. Organizing, translating and recognizing knowledge are therefore key elements of the professional practice of social worker and other professionals in a transnationalizing world.
The course is held in English. Language for exams (English or German) can be chosen by students. |
