The cultural dimension of nutrition, health & body shape
This seminar aims to further develop the theoretical and methodological skills acquired in Cultural Studies in Practice and Methods of Applied Linguistics with a focus on spoken data relating to any aspect of nutrition, health and/or body (images) in modern Western society. Students will be asked to critically question how myths relating to beauty, health and nutrition are the product of cultural hegemony and how subject positioning by means of language within any discourse relating to beauty, health and nutrition either reproduces, opposes or renegotiates the dominant ideologies which our culture in general and our personal behavior in particular is based on.
The language of instruction will be English, literature will be available in both English and German. A good command of English is hence necessary for successful participation.
Please note that if you miss the first session and fail to notify me in advance, you might not be able to participate in the course.
