Course Description: The main focus of this course is on the development of creative writing skills for both personal enrichment and future implementation in the classroom.
Course Goals: The primary goals of the course are to have students write a short story by reading the required texts, discussing the texts in depth during class, and carrying out a number of creative writing tasks. An additional goal is for students to work cooperatively in small groups to research and report on aspects of the writing course to bring greater textual understanding to the entire class. A final goal is to have students apply a positive critical perspective in order to aid their fellow students with the development of their own writing submissions.
Requirements: Class participation is the essence of this course. All students will need to contribute to class discussion and work cooperatively in groups. Students will be asked to complete certain in-class writing assignments as well as completing a poem and short story as part of the graded submission. Students will also write a short personal reflection at the end of the course summarizing their writing and editing rational.
