To pass the course, possession of the novels in paper form is obligatory and students are expected to give a brief presentation. The final grade will be determined by a term paper, to be handed in towards the end of the semesterbreak. A course reader with theoretical texts will be made available online at the beginning of the semester. |

We will read and discuss two award-winning British novels, The Remains of the Day by Nobel Prize winner Kazuo Ishiguro and England, England by Julian Barnes, and thus explore the popular genre of historiographic metafiction. Both novels deal with concepts of history, memory, and identity in very different ways. Using Ansgar Nünning's structuralist typology, the course aims to introduce you to a systematic approach to the genre. Please buy the tow novels in the following editions only:
