Lerninhalte

The focus of this course is on the representation of surveillance and containment (forms of social control) in literature and film. We will be examining the complex correlations between state sanctioned espionage on the one hand, and the voyeuristic tendencies inherent in the act of gazing on the other.

Accordingly we will be examining this research topic through a close reading of the novel The Innocent by Ian McEwan as well as a number of critical texts by theoreticians such as David Lyon, Laura Mulvey, Michel Foucault, Jacques Lacan and Mikhail Bakhtin.

These contributions will enable us to explore a range of concepts such as "the gaze", "dataveillance" and "visual pleasure. We will consider gender identity with regards to state-sanctioned sexuality as a political form of social control. Most of these texts will be made available either online or on learnweb but you will be expected to buy and read the novel The Innocent by Ian McEwan. Suggested viewing will also include films such as Casablanca, Rear Window and Minority Report.
