Students will have to buy and read Wilkie Collins's novel The Moonstone (1868) in the Oxford World's Classics edition before the start of the term (ISBN 978-0199536726).

Students will have to take part in the "Victorian Study Day" on Friday 12th April 2019, c. 11:00 to 16:00 hrs. in LN 004. From 16th April 2019 on the course will take place every Tuesday.

Students are expected to participate regularly and actively, to prepare a presentation, and to write a term paper.

This seminar is dedicated to the enormously relevant and extremely successful genre of sensation fiction, which had its peak in the 1860s. We will start by looking at short stories by Edgar Allan Poe and other writers, whose texts feature sensational characteristics and will then concentrate on one of the key texts of the genre.
